You've booked your keepsake ultrasound! Now, how can you help your little one get ready for their close-up?


While every baby has a mind of their own, there are a few "pro-tips" from ultrasound techs that can help set the stage for amazing, clear pictures.


  1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! This is the #1 secret. Start increasing your water intake a few days before your appointment. Well-hydrated mamas have clearer amniotic fluid, which is the "window" the ultrasound uses to see your baby. Clear fluid = clear pictures.

  2. A Sweet Snack: About 15-20 minutes before your scan, try having a small, natural sugar snack like a glass of orange juice or a piece of chocolate. This can often wake a sleepy baby up and get them moving.

  3. Know Your Baby's "Active Time": Does your baby always have a dance party after lunch? Or first thing in the morning? Try to book your appointment during their natural active window.

  4. Wear Comfy Clothes: You’ll need easy access to your belly, so a cozy, two-piece outfit (like a maternity top and pants/skirt) is much easier than a dress.

  5. Relax and Enjoy It: A full bladder isn't necessary (like it is for some medical scans!). The most important thing is for you to be relaxed and comfortable so the tech can do their magic.

  6. Be Ready to Move: Is baby being shy and facing your back? Your tech might ask you to take a short walk, do a little jiggle, or roll to your side. A little movement can be all it takes to get them to change positions.

  7. Hit the 'Magic Window': As we said in our last post, booking between 27-32 weeks is your best bet for those adorable, chubby-cheek face shots!
